Things to avoid when choosing a baby name
Your child is going to grow up one day – make sure you pick a name that will suit an adult as well as a child.
2. Picking a name that’s hard to spell or pronounce
You don’t want everyone your child meets to stumble over their name – make sure your name is not so unusual that no one knows how to say it or spell it!
3. Picking an unusual spelling of a name
While an unusual spelling can make your child’s name unique, it can be a pain for someone who has an odd spelling of a name to be continually correcting people later on in life.
4. Picking a name that doesn’t roll off the tongue
Does the name flow naturally? It’s typical to pick a short name if your surname is long, and vice-versa. Sound out the name, and make sure it’s got a melody to it.
5. Picking a name that runs together
Try to avoid a name ending in a letter that your surname starts with – this can be difficult to say. Peter Robinson, for example, may feel un-natural adding a pause between their two names.
6. Picking a pun/joke name
“Holly Wood”, “Bud Weiser”? No way! It will lose its lustre very quickly, and leave you with a resentful child in the future.
